Ear Aesthetics (Otoplasty)
Aesthetics of the ear; It is the generic name given to operations which usually include prominent ear surgery and ear deformities.
The ears are almost always noticeable, especially in the front view, if there is a difference. Especially men with short hair and women who collect hair are noteworthy, it can have negative effects on their self-esteem and psychology. Since the development of the ear is completed at an early age, if the person has a prominent ear, the discomfort manifests itself from an early age.
Prominent ear definition; It is when the angle of the head and ear is wider than normal. Although the angle between the head and ear is normal, the natural “Y” -shaped folds of the auricle are less pronounced and indistinct than normal, causing an abnormal appearance.
Before the surgery
The medications used by the person, chronic illnesses and allergy history should be questioned. The patient must be informed about the tennis headband-like apparatus that he must wear socially for three to four weeks.
Since ear development is completed around the age of 5-6, the best time to treat prominent ear in children is the preschool period or school transition periods. In this way the psychological traumas and social problems that the child can experience in school life are prevented.
Operation
The operation is an operation lasting about 1 hour, which can be performed under local or sedative (semi-sleep) or general anesthesia. It is an operation in which the cartilage and soft tissues that shape the ear are reshaped from an initial incision of about 3-4 cm near the head behind the ear. Pain is controlled with both regional anesthesia during surgery and postoperative medications.
After the operation, an appliance similar to a tennis bandage is used to adapt the new ear shape. There will be no visible scars after the procedure.
Postoperative
The early period after surgery usually passes at ease. There may be minimal swelling, but there may not be a clear picture because edema occurs in the first week immediately following surgery.
You can be discharged the same day. You can take a shower the next day. You will only be asked to apply the antibiotic cream that was given to you on the suture line.
The swelling will go away in 3-4 days. The device should be worn for about a month. It will take 2-3 months to be fully finalized. The person can go back to work the next day. Appropriate antibiotics and analgesics are used. Absorbable stitches are used, no stitches are removed.
Things to know
The prominent ear is usually inherited. In other words, if it is present in the parents, it can also be in the child.
It can be seen more in boys. Prominent ear disorder can only be permanently corrected with surgery.
